Water Heater Repair or Replace Water Heater?

San Diego Co 760-458-8958 & Orange County 760-458-8958
A conventional tank style water heater has an expected life of about 8-12 years, 10 on average. It used to be that water heaters were designed so that as your water heater aged and specific parts failed those individual parts could be replaced. That could at least by you a little more time. However today, most water heaters and all of their components are in a sealed unit making it nearly impossible to change out parts. Wonder who came up with that design?

Replace Water Heater Options

Conventional Tank Water Heater. If money is an option, you may want to replace your old tank water heater with another water heater. A brand new tank water will cost about $1850 including installation and hauling away your old water heater.

At Leak Star we prefer Bradford White water heaters. They are dependable and come with a 6 year warranty on the water heater itself and we provide a 1 year warranty on our labor.

Tankless Water Heater or Flash Water Heater. If immediate cost is of no concern to you, but you are thinking more of the long term value than a tankless water heater may be the right choice for you. A tankless water heater will need to be retrofitted. The cost of the tankless water heater unit itself depending on the model you chose will cost significantly more. However over the long term, savings will be significant.

At leak Star we recommend Navien 240A. It is the larger model, costing $3850,  there are smaller units available. Labor costs depend on where it will be located. In some cases a tankless water heater is not an option because there is no location. Navien has a 5 year warranty and at Leak Star we provide a 1 year warranty on our labor.

Signs It's Time to Replace Your Water Heater
  • Water is tinged brown or there are metal flecks in the water. This is a sure sign your water heater is on it's way out.
  • Loud popping or cracking sounds coming from inside of the tank. These sounds may indicate a heavy buildup of minerals or sedaments that have built up around the heating element.
  • Water leaking from your water heater is a sure sign that your water heater need to be replaced immediately. There are dangers associated with a leaking water heater that you want to take seriously.

Water Heater Customer Reviews
"Leak Star Advanced Leak Detection helped us greatly with our water heater leak. Timo helped guide me to stop the water from completely flooding our garage. Thank You Leak Star!" Jennay in Escondido (Yelp Review)
"Late last Friday, my downstairs neighbor informed me that my water heater was leaking.  Saturday morning I did some searching and found Timo.  And thank goodness I did!  I think poor Timo thought it was just a water heater replacement, because what did I know about water damage, mold and the dissolution of a concrete pad?  Thankfully the water heater is out on the balcony in a small closet, otherwise the damage to my unit and my neighbor's would have been much more extensive.  As it was, Timo had to help tear out the damaged drywall for both my unit and the neighbors, then brought in equipment to dry out the closet.  And then, because he's just a good guy, he found a drywall installer for me (even though that was not his job).  And THEN, because the concrete pad literally had turned to sand because of the leak, he mixed and poured a new pad for me.  Remember, he's supposed to do plumbing, not construction!  But, Timo did it all with professionalism, kindness and as quickly as he could.  To top it off, he listened patiently to my random lawyer questions and took a lot of time to walk me through my options and provided me sound advice, on top of stellar service. I would recommend Timo to anyone."  Michele H. in San Diego (Yelp)
